11. WARMIA AND MAZURY /
WARMIA I MAZURY /

One of unique elements of Mazury is wooden sacral architecture. Its typical example is an 18th century church in Rychnów having octagonal horizontal elevation and an eight-sloped roof covered with reeds. Among the distinctive characteristics of this region are highly developed domestic utensils. We can distinguish two groups of them: those utensils valuable for their shape and those whose painted ornamentation is most important. The most outstanding of the latter are painted chests and wardrobes with colourful flower motifs. In the Mazury cottage the most eye-catching was the tiled stove. Tiles from Mazury are a very peculiar and characteristic element of folk craft. Folk costume has almost completely disappeared in this area. However, wood sculpture (crucified Christ, Pieta) and smith's art are still alive.
