1. GROUP OF KIELCE AND SANDOMIERZ
/ GRUPA KIELECKO-SANDOMIERSKA/

This area belongs to the most ethnically native Polish lands. It can be divided into the Kielce region (around The Świętokrzyskie Mountains) and the Sandomierz region (Puszcza Sandomierska) inhabited by the so called Lasowiacy. The traditional building style is characterised by a wooden cottage with a hipped roof covered with straw or, in The Świętokszyskie Mountains, with shingle. The most characteristic utensil in the cottage was a wooden “lasowiacka” chest, which was made mainly in the town of Sokoły. It was decorated with flower motifs with the dominant colours of yellow and black. Folk costumes of this region have practically disappeared and become only museum specimens. The industrial region of Kielce and Sandomierz is characterised by a large development of ornamentation in metal. However, there is no wooden sculpture craft here. Pottery of this region has long traditions. The most important pottery centre is Iłża with figures of birds and people. Pottery is also produced in Desków, Kąty, Chałupki, etc.
