9. REGION OF BIAŁYSTOK

The region of Białystok is an area where Polish Podlasie joins the Russian and Lithuanian population. It is characterised by wooden architecture with pitched roofs, which are often ornamented in the style of Russian cottages. In the region of Hajnówka we can find often elongated type of corral where the living area of the house is joined with the room for livestock in one line. The characteristic thing in the region of Białystok are numerous roadside crosses. In this region we can find Podlasie-type cutouts in the form of a small circle with an eight-point star. There are also pictures on glass and woodcuts. This region is also characterised by wattled straw items, for instance huge cereal crop baskets. We must also mention the peculiar type of pottery called “siwaki”. This region is also marked by colourful Easter eggs. The most distinctive are those from the Suwałki region having geometrical ornamentations with the sun motif.
